Building a Greener Future: YSAD Engages in Climate Change Stakeholder Forum in Abia

YSAD recently took part in a significant two-day stakeholder engagement on climate change, organized by the Abia State Ministry of Environment in Umuahia from August 29 to 30. Under the theme “Towards Abia Climate Governance and Policy Framework: Widening Participation for Sustainable Growth,” the event brought together key players committed to addressing climate challenges in the region.

The forum opened with a warm welcome from the Commissioner of Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna. Notably, Dr. Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, was represented by his deputy, who delivered remarks highlighting the state’s commitment to climate governance. Goodwill messages from the Director General of the National Climate Change Commission (NCCC), the Chairman of the Abia State House Committee on Environment, and a representative from the National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, reinforced the collective pledge to develop a comprehensive Climate Change Policy and Action Plan for Abia State.

Key presentations addressed crucial topics, including “Aligning Sub-National Climate Governance with the National Framework for the Attainment of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)” and “Pathways for Effective Climate Governance and Policy for Abia State.” These discussions set the stage for deeper engagement and understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The event also included interactive syndicate sessions that focused on identifying stakeholders, assessing climate hazards in Abia State, evaluating vulnerability factors, and discussing strategies for climate change mitigation, adaptation, and addressing infrastructural gaps. These collaborative discussions culminated in a communiqué, outlining actionable insights and commitments made by participants.

This engagement marks a vital step towards enhancing climate governance in Abia State, ensuring that diverse voices contribute to sustainable growth and effective policy-making. YSAD is proud to be part of this crucial dialogue, paving the way for a resilient and environmentally conscious future.
